Renault 551 - Tractor wont start, plenty of black smoke but will not fire.

HI Guys, need some help on my 551 from Australia. Bought this 551 second hand a few years ago and I'm having some frustrating issues with. Started with the front end hydraulic rams, then the starter motor and now it just wont start. I cleaned the fuel intake and I believe I got air into the line which is causing it not to start. Ive tried on 5 or more occasions ofr over an hour each time to start it and it just wont start. It cranks over fine with plenty of black smoke but it just will not fire. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm a little mechanically minded but unfamiliar with diesels. Any help, no matter how simple or obvious would be very much appreciated. Thanks, NIck.

In the link (landtreff.de/betriebsanleitung-renault-551-551-4-t…) you can find an user manual. The language is german, that could be difficult for you to read.
You write there is some air into the line, did you vent (get the air out) the fuel lines and the filter?
In the appendix is a picture what comes out the user manuel, I hope you can something with that, otherwise I can translate it. I can't find a manual in English

Hello Down under Nick N.: Please don't blame a (good old) RENAULT tractor, it is bad maintenance why it will not start.
First check your air intake filter. I think it is full of dust causing the black smoke. (Black smoke is a sign of poor air intake, lack of oxygen).
B.T.W.: Black smoke also means there is enough fuel injection.

It is a nice one!

Have you tried to pull it with another tractor, because sometimes the starter is just not strong enough especially when it hasn't been running for such a long time.

Yeahhhh, funny. In the middle of nowhere of stinking Ausy outback next door neighbour Crocodile Dundee's tractor is 893 miles away. Only by swamp road. :P
Well, count your blessings. Here, a nearby (of mine) sawmill is permitted to use chainsaw for only 3 minutes a day because of new environmental legislation.

This is Holland:

Does this tractor have glow plugs? Check if they get electricity.
Some tractors are hard to start the first time after you change the fuel filters. If you pull start with another tractor or pickup truck the problem may be over. I recommend a backward pullstart in obviously the highest backward gear because of the loaderbucket.

@Gerron
Then he has to cut the tree first... 😅

@Gerron The highest gear backwards is to slow to pull the tractor on, if the reverse is at the same gear lever as the gears forward. If there is a lever with only the forward and reverse it is possible

He can put the chain or rope under the bucket, problem solved.

There is something else I don't like about the black smoke you wrote of.
Usually smoke looks white or grey when a diesel engine doesn't start up. Now I wonder you probably used another kind of fuel. Are you sure you filled up your dieseltractor with diesel fuel or, by mistake, gasoline?

Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions! I have checked air intake but will check again. I'll try to bleed the air from fuel line, thanks so much for the diagram, my high school German might do the trick! I don't think it's the glow plugs, it should crank after trying for long periods of time. The starter motor is brand new so I don't think that's an issue, it turns over at good speed. No other tractor for pull start, next door Neighbour is 400 Klms away. And I'm curtain the fuel is correct and it is diesel. I won't be able to try it again for a week or so but I'll let you all know how I go! Thanks again guys!!

Also pay attention to the rubber hose between filter and air-intake-manifold. Sometimes they close ( sucks flat) by high vacuüm when filter was dirty.

@Nick N
Did you succeed to start the tractor?
