Renault 551 - Tractor wont start, plenty of black smoke but will not fire.
HI Guys, need some help on my 551 from Australia. Bought this 551 second hand a few years ago and I'm having some frustrating issues with. Started with the front end hydraulic rams, then the starter motor and now it just wont start. I cleaned the fuel intake and I believe I got air into the line which is causing it not to start. Ive tried on 5 or more occasions ofr over an hour each time to start it and it just wont start. It cranks over fine with plenty of black smoke but it just will not fire. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm a little mechanically minded but unfamiliar with diesels. Any help, no matter how simple or obvious would be very much appreciated. Thanks, NIck.

You write there is some air into the line, did you vent (get the air out) the fuel lines and the filter?
In the appendix is a picture what comes out the user manuel, I hope you can something with that, otherwise I can translate it. I can't find a manual in English

First check your air intake filter. I think it is full of dust causing the black smoke. (Black smoke is a sign of poor air intake, lack of oxygen).
B.T.W.: Black smoke also means there is enough fuel injection.
It is a nice one!
Some tractors are hard to start the first time after you change the fuel filters. If you pull start with another tractor or pickup truck the problem may be over. I recommend a backward pullstart in obviously the highest backward gear because of the loaderbucket.
There is something else I don't like about the black smoke you wrote of.
Usually smoke looks white or grey when a diesel engine doesn't start up. Now I wonder you probably used another kind of fuel. Are you sure you filled up your dieseltractor with diesel fuel or, by mistake, gasoline?
