Hello, Buying guide for MLA 628 and MLA 627 by a Manitou dealer service fitter.
MLA 628 were better then the MLA 627 as the end of boom didn't have the donkeys head sticking up which could get in the way if stacking bales ect close to roofs.
Check for play in the front carriage and tilt and crowd ram also make sure the tilt and crowd ram isn't leaking as the rod can be damaged when loading over side of trailers. As can the metal pipes running under the boom. (cheap to replace)
Check the front axle oil level and the condition of the oil, brakes some times get noisey if the oil isn't changed (every 500hr). If oil level high suspect brake seals leaking (brakes run on Hyd so will fill axle with Hyd oil) Brakes also fitted in the rear axle but have less plates (oil every 1000hr)
Use a bucket on the front to and take the weight to check for play in the main pivot or lift boom right up and if worn ypu sould be able to feel the truck move. Expensive to repair if the chassic is worn.
Well in the middle check the front drive shaft u/j's and there is also a support bearing which ofens wears beacause they not easy to grease. Drive round on full lock and listed for rattles, if rattles bearing worn out.
Transmisison is the same unit in the 4 spped MLA 627 as in the MLA 628 just with different programme in the EDS lever. Check oil if smells burnt walk away!
If truck jumps out of FWD/REV will be rubber gatter on the end of the lever gone stiff.
Drive shaft from engine to transmission has to rubber doughnut ever end check on condition as these can break up (More a problem on MLA 628-120LSU) Easy to change transmission end not so the engine end as no access through cab floor or fron under truck.
MLA 628 120 LS had a habit of snapping the bolts that hold the rubber couplings on. Removable covers in cab makes these easy to change. These were changed as part of a modifiction. Hyd pumps also can shear there output shaft leaving you with full hyds but no drive. New pump
