The Howard Bigbaler Mk.1 made from about 1974 until replaced by The Mk.2. The bales were 8 feet long by 5 feet wide by 5 feet high and of middle density. I hope he realised that the tailgate was still open before he resumed baling again ( A disaster otherwise! ) The swath needed to be perfectly wide for the baler to work well, otherwise you had to weave from side to side all the time. The(3) knotters were notoriously unreliable in the early ones, as was that single P.T.O. shaft with the C.V.joint which was later replaced by a 2 stage drive shaft in the Mk.2 version. The rapid rise in popularity of the big round baler and later the Hesston type big square balers killed the machine off virtually stone dead in The 1980's.Curiously enough though, there is still a demand for decent secondhand Howard Bigbalers, They use them for baling reeds for thatching. The action of the machine is quite gentle as there are no knives to cut the crop and also being middle density, the material is not crushed to any extent.

Because we had one! I have spent many an hour battling with the knotters on those things. We got tired of it and bought a Claas round baler and never looked back.
